Saturday Beer Reads

Fall officially began this week.  Happy autumn! I’m trying to embrace the fall season after the memorable and fun summer. I’m mourning the end of fresh tomatoes and peaches, but now we can look forward to apples, pumpkins and of course, seasonal beers like pumpkin, Oktoberfest, and Marzens. Below are a few gems I found to read on this first weekend of fall.

Manor Hill taproom behind the bar

One of my favorite breweries is back in the news. Read about Wesley Case’s visit to Manor Hill Brewing’s farm brewery.

In celebration of fall, read about The Best German Lagers to Drink for This Year;s Oktoberfest.

I try to drink a glass of water for every beer I drink. Well, try 3 glasses for each beer. Business Insider says “We tried the alcohol diet Tom Brady put Rob Gronkowski on, and it was a lot harder than we imagined”.

Liz Murphy of Naptown Pint has started a new podcast and introduced a new brewery, Goonda. Tap into the beer world with this great new pintcast.

Cheers!

Saturday Beer Reads

It’s September and it sure feels like autumn. The cool air is slowing my garden’s tomato production but fall offers lots of great things to make up for it. So, crack open your favorite harvest ale and check out these musings for this weekend. And oh, yeah, don’t forget about Hysteria’s Labor Day bash, I’ll be there.

Speaking of fall, check out Maureen O’Prey’s take on pumpkin beers:

Men’s Fitness has their own spin on the top 8 fall craft brews. I’m happy to see Baltimore’s Heavy Seas Marzen made the list. Danielle St. Pierre of Best Products came up with her own list. Sam Adams Octoberfest made both lists.

I think I’ve heard all 41 of Chris Sands’s Uncapped podcasts. I’m excited to learn that Guinness is projected to open its brewery in mid-October of this year. To learn more about this exciting new Maryland brewery, listen or watch Episode 041 –  Guinness Brewery in Baltimore.

In my pursuit to visit 57 Maryland breweries, I have visited all of Sun reporter Wesley Case’s top Baltimore taprooms, except Diamondback. For me, it’s difficult to whittle down just 5 taprooms. What about Jailbreak? Manor Hill? Oliver Brewing? What do you think?

Saturday Beer Reads

As summer winds down, the beer world gears up for Labor Day, just a warm up for autumn beers. This Labor Day weekend, Hysteria Brewing is planning their reopening. According to their Facebook page, they will be open from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm on Saturday. I see a Trash Panda in my future.

Also, I’ve recently heard from the folks at Crooked Crab Brewing. They hope to open in Anne Arundel County sometime in December.

Once again, I’ve found a few articles that I found interesting. So, take a well-deserved break this weekend and catch up on the beer world.

You know Heineken, the big brewery from Amsterdam purchased Lagunitas. Well, those 2 pot smoking cultures are now putting marijuana in their beer. Read about New Lagunitas Beer is Made with Marijuana – But it Won’t Get You High.

I just had a wonderful beer pairing at Victoria Gastro Pub,  Manor Hill’s Citra Splendor with their Duck Fat Fries. This Grilled Cheese and Beer Pairing article explains why salt and beer are so scrumptious.

With such a cool August, I’m ready for a good harvest ale, or maybe a pumpkin. Mark Pasquinelli details Brewing the Perfect Pumpkin Ale.

For those masochistic enough to follow this blog, you know I love Maine Beer Company from my trip to Acadia this summer. JR Shirt reviews Maine Beer Co. and MO in Give Me Some MO (everything).

Cheers!

Weekend Beer Reads

It looks like we will have a dry weekend, finally. I plan on tasting a few beers this afternoon with SPBW’s bar crawl. They are making it interesting by using the light rail and starting at Union. I’m sure there’s a blog post in this one.

If you need a break from all your outdoor activities, take a break and peruse these articles about beer I’ve found for you.

Liz Murphy’s Naptown Pint gives a great prep for Reform on Tap Task Force.

Liz is not the only women in the beer world. Read about Pink Boots Society hosts Philly symposium to battle sexism in the beer industry.  Also,  Austin just got Two Female Brewery Owners to Bring Brewing downtown.

You may have read that Millennials are killing craft beer.  The Motley Fool explains it’s all a vicious rumor.

This Austrian brewery has a unique use of beer – Take a Dip … in a Beer Pool.

Reading Rainy Weekend

Really, another rainy weekend? I’m happy because my tomatoes seem to like it but it is starting to get old. I feel like I’m back in Maine. Maryland in August is supposed to be hot and dry. Well, it’s still the weekend. Make a little “me” time. Crack open a beer or slice a tomato and enjoy these hand-picked articles about beer, just for you.  Continue reading Reading Rainy Weekend

Weekend Reads

Ah, summer. Hot days and muggy nights. Crabs and beer. And juicy garden fresh tomatoes. For me, my garden is pumping out tomatoes faster than we can eat them. We are planning a crab feast for visiting relatives in a few weeks. This week, I have finally started moving on the Maryland Brewery Challenge, visiting number 20 last Sunday and planning number 21 (Falling Branch) this weekend. It is good to have beer loving friends to help me along with this project. Life is good.

So, on this beautiful weekend, find a quiet moment to savor a beer and ponder over these articles about your favorite beverage.  Continue reading Weekend Reads

Beer Musings for a Rainy Weekend

I encourage you to stay out of the rain this weekend and take it easy. Here are a few articles I have discovered to occupy your time while indoors.

Episode 035 of the Uncapped Podcast interviews Flying Dog’s CEO Jim Caruso, talking about his company’s decision to withdraw from the Brewer’s Association due to BA’s new policies.

Try out this eclectic collection of summer beers from Cool Material.

The Brewers Association offers online videos to learn about pairing food with beer.

I am always curious about the financial world of beers. Here’s a look at the stocks behind the best-selling beers of 2017.

NPR takes a look at craft beer brought to you by big beer.

Stay dry my friends. Cheers!

Saturday Beer Reads

It’s been a hot week. So, stay indoors, find a cool place to relax. I’ve found a few articles about the beer world that might interest you.

There is big news in the local Baltimore beer world. DuClaw Brewing is seeking an investor or buyer, according to the Baltimore Sun. You can read about my recent visit to their Rosedale facility at my Duclaw visit.

Another local issue concerns Crownsville’s Lures Bar and Grille, which a year ago stopped carrying domestic bottles like Budweiser and Miller. Read about their even stronger stand to “discontinuing the sale of products that come through companies owned by Anheuser-Busch.” This means, as Troegs’ rep, Beer_gypsy, told me, Lures pulled all the Troegs’ beer from their store because it was delivered by an Anheuser-Busch distributor. I would be very interested in learning what people think about this.

Read about the best beer in every state. I guarantee this one will spark debate among your beer loving friends.

Women are slowly working their way into today’s world of beer. Years ago, women were the brewers of the day. Did you know Jane Austen was a home brewer? And speaking of that, I wonder what Jane would think about ‘Beer for women’ launched by Czech brewery sparking sexist outrage.

Finally, Think, Drink, But Then Repeat raises the question, “Can a beer be judged with just one sip?”. This article raises legitimate questions about our obsession with untappd as well as the changing circumstances that affect our beer tasting experience.

Cheers!
