Beer Reads and Many Flavors

My 17 tomatoes are loving this hot weather. Right now, they are pumping out massive amounts of delicious fruit. We are devouring Cherokee Purples, Brandywines, Sungolds, Better Boys, Early Girls, Green Zebras and Ground Cherries in many forms – sliced, in BLTs, in gazpacho, tomato sauce – but it’s difficult to keep up with the flow. Our neighbors and friends are “helping out” with the overflow.

So, I grow tomatoes because I love them and I always assume others do too. The other day I brought some ground cherry tomatoes to Pint Night at Frisco Tap House to share. This little tomato of the tomatillo family comes in a tiny paper husk. Inside the husk is a tiny grapelike fruit bursting with sweetness. I assumed everyone would enjoy it and just about everyone did. However, one of our crew knew he wouldn’t like it but I insisted because I assumed (you know what happens when you assume) he would love it. He gave it a try but you could tell he really didn’t like it

The take away from this, different people like different things. I should know this, there are many flavors I don’t enjoy. In the beer world, I’m not a fan of rye beers, I do like a well-balanced IPA but I’m definitely not a hop head – bitterness for bitterness sake is just not my thing. Also, I really don’t enjoy beers with cinnamon (except Olde Mother’s Uptown Brown is a perfect blend of coconut and cinnamon).

There’s a beer for everyone. From porters to sours, and IPAs to a grisette, their flavor profile is all-encompassing. I guess that’s why I’m such a big fan of the brewing craft.

Craft Beer&Brewing, Kveik: The Ancient and Modern Way to Brew. I keep reading about Kveik, a Norwegian farmhouse yeast. Has anyone tried these rare beers? What’s the verdict?

VinePair, American Breweries Survived Prohibition by Making Near-Beer, Baby Formula, and Ice Cream. It is amazing what lengths brewers went to stay in business during prohibition.

Inc., How Goose Island Beer Company Succeeded in the Competitive Craft Beer Industry. Despite AB InBev’s purchase of GI, I still enjoy their beer. This story gives me hope in this never-ending encroachment of big beer.

Cheers!

  1. I’ve made two Kveik beers. For me the jury is still out. The beer certainly ferments out quickly. Not sure if I gave you one, but my 2019 Spring DIPA was fermented with Kveik Voss. If you want to try a commercial beer made with Kveik checkout out Hysteria’s new Noosen Scooten Joosen (recently tapped)
