New Providence, The Bahamas, January 10, 2019
I owe our current adventure to the Beer Diet. I reached my goal in November and now Mrs. Adventures and I are enjoying the sun and 75 degrees poolside at the Grand Hyatt in The Bahamas. Very nice!
The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar is a brand new resort, open less than a year. We arranged a deal through Costco Travel. The flight, room and transportation to and from the airport is a fixed price. The rest is ala cart.
I almost always ask returning travelers what are their 3 favorite and least favorite things about their trip. Here are my lists.
Top 3 favorite things:
- No driving, no wallet; with 30+ bars and restaurants, 6 pools and a beach, we have all we need. We just charge the food and drink to the room. BTW, the food is simply amazing!
- Amazing weather and views; I’m mesmerized by the green-blue crystal clear water and white sand beaches.
- The grounds and buildings are immaculate. It’s all brand new.
Least favorite things(3):
- Wow, the food and drinks are expensive (but good)!
- The flight is 5 hours.
- The centerpiece of the resort is the casino. I’m really not a gambler.
Local Beer
I sampled a few local beers. Sands is advertised as the only true decent traditional lager, light and traditional lager, light and crisp with some malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Kalik is made on the island by Heineken. It really tastes like a Heineken, sweet and skunky. I was lucky enough to run across a craft beer made in the Bahamas, Pirate Republic’s Island Pirate Ale. I actually ordered and drank this flavorful, well-balanced IPA while sitting in a pool. The bar is appropriately named H20. My ale was served in a plastic cup but who cares?
At Cleo Mediterraneo, a terrific Moroccan restaurant, I tried a couple more Pirate Republic ales. The Gold & type of Piracy is a mediocre witbier, flat with no banana or clove esters. On the other hand, Black Beer’d Stout is a unique malty, roasty stout. It’s sort of a Troegs Troegenator Double Bock and coffee stout mix. It was great with the flourless chocolate cake.
Note: I’m typing this in on my iPhone in the Charlotte airport while waiting for our plane. It’s 2 hours late! Sorry for all the expected typos.
Cheers!
