I’ve been reading Tristan Gooley’s The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs and starting to develop a keen eye for natural clues about our world. For instance, did you know moss grows on the north side of a tree and contrails predict bad weather? So, when I spotted a Tröegs Mad Elf at Frisco Tap House, I knew winter was just around the corner.

Despite missing our beloved Tröegs rep, Meghan (she’s left the beer industry), 12 of us sampled various Tröegs beers for Tröegs pint night including:
- Mad Elf: Belgian Strong Dark Ale, delicious and sweet but be careful, it’s 11%
- Bourbon Barrel-Aged Troegenator: The star of the night! A boozy doppelbock with a molasses nose and sweet malt, bourbon and vanilla flavors. 10.8%
- Nitro Chocolate Stout: A rich, creamy cocoa flavored stout. Very quaffable.
- Mortal Cherry: A deep red color tasting of sour cherries. A delicious tart beer for sour lovers, not for the faint hearted.
- Blackberry Tizzy: A bourbon and sour ale, surprisingly sweet. This mild blackberry flavor and contrasting sweet and tart qualities is a sour beer for non-sour drinkers. Mixed reviews on this one.

Frisco manager, Keith, stopped by our table to show off a few of his Hardywood Gingerbread Stouts (GBS). These winter gems are often listed among the best beers of the season.

Only 6 days until Christmas – Happy Holidays! Cheers!
