Galveston, TX Halloween, 2018

It rained on Halloween for a soggy last day in Galveston. The rain came down in sheets for about an hour. We waited out the rain, then tried to visit 3 breweries: Beerfoot Brewery, the Devil and the Deep Brewing, and Galveston Island Brewing.

Beerfoot is a cozy little brewpub near the Pleasure Pier. The Pleasure Pier is a small gulf-side amusement park complete with a Ferris wheel.

It was $5 flights so I ordered 4 tasters. The Little Mermaid (Ariel) dressed bartender delivered my beers in an almost empty taproom.

My favorite was the ZZ Scot, a Scottish Ale, with a little smoke flavor and nice caramel sweetness. The Rohlfsbier was a Marzen or Oktoberfest, a perfect style for Halloween, but I found it thin bodied and rather flavorless. The orange-colored beer on the left was an Orange Mimosa, a Radler made of OJ and an orange wit. It was kinda fun. The session ale was pretty standard fair.

There were signs everywhere for Lone Star, the largest motorcycle rally held in Texas. This year, Galveston was expecting 400,000 and it starts the next day, November 1st. We met two participants of the Lone Star Rally, Linda and John, from Denham Springs, LA. They arrived early to Galveston. We had an interesting political discussion (they are Trump supporters). The Ariel-clad bartender said she normally shuts down politics at the bar but let us talk because we were so well-behaved.

Previously, we had visited historic downtown Galveston hoping to visit the Devil and the Deep Brewery. Unfortunately, they were closed. Instead, we walked around town and took in the sites. Old shops and grand buildings like the Strand are a must to see while in the neighborhood.

Our final stop on the Galveston Brewery tour was the Galveston Island Brewery. I had already sampled their Citra Mellow at Jimmy’s on the Pier and found it delicious. We headed inside and were surprised to see our new friends, John and Linda. We joined them, sharing a couple flights. I thought the Pit Pat (a chocolate porter) was outstanding and the Tiki Wheat is a solid wheat ale.

We hope to come again to Galveston. All the food was delicious and the beer scene is quite promising. Add some of it’s natural beauty and a heated pool, you just can’t go wrong.

Cheers!
