Galveston, TX Oct. 29-Nov. 1 2018

An easy hour drive from Houston is Galveston Island. We decided to enjoy a few beach days before our niece’s Houston wedding.

For me, my knowledge of Galveston was limited to a few conversations with my niece and of course, Glen Campbell’s song:

Galveston, oh, Galveston
I still hear your seawinds blowing
I still see her dark eyes glowing
She was twenty one, when I left Galveston

Galveston is a coastal resort city along the Gulf of Mexico. We found a HomeAway resort along the seawall with a view of the gulf. All the gates and entry codes were initially challenging but we loved the heated pool and easy access to the beach.

We had a terrific beach day: 80 degrees, sunny skies and gentle breezes. A long walk along the beach amongst longlegged sea birds led us to lunch at Jimmy’s on the Pier. Discovering Jimmy’s was a lucky, spontaneous happenstance. We had to walk through a nearly abandoned store, then up a rugged set of stairs with an ominous sign stating “uneven stairs, no running allowed”. The journey, however, was worth the view.

Perhaps it was the magic of the day but lunch was remarkable. I enjoyed a chicken taco and a Galveston Island Brewery Citra Mellow. Here’s my 3.75 untappd review of this American Pale Ale:

Just what the doctor ordered! An easy drinking IPA with lots of Citra flavor; mildly bitter flavor mixed with juicy citrus & a touch of sweetness.

Our table overlooked the gulf and the fishing pier out back. We learned our lunch included a pass to walk along the pier, which took us away from the noise of the Seawall traffic. I recommend taking the walk, if you have time.

The walk back to the resort meandered by the Galveston Island Brewery. It was too early to stop in for a beer but I’d already had a sample from this terrific brewery.
