The choking humidity makes amphibians of us all, in Bombay, breathing water in air; you learn to live with it, and you learn to like it, or you leave.
Gregory David Roberts
We chose to leave not Bombay but hot and muggy Columbia, MD, at least for a few days, heading north to the relative cool of the Catoctin Mountain Park in Thurmont, Maryland. The air in the park was still dripping with humidity and the ground had moss everywhere but the temperature was deliciously cool. We had a couple great days of tent camping with campfire cooked meals in this hidden gem of a national park.
All good things must come to an end and we drove off the mountain, only to discover the weather was even hotter and, if possible, muggier. With a vicious storm heading our way, we sped to the nearest air-conditioned comfort, The Springfield Manor Winery, Distillery, and Brewery. At the end of the long driveway, an elegant event manor sat on the right with tasting rooms in a converted barn on the left.
Inside, we found the upstairs tasting room the most inviting and shared a flight of beer. Several other customers sipped Sangria from spiraling flights. From the comfort and safety of the converted barn, we witnessed the violent thunderstorm roll in.
The brewery at Springfield Manor is only a year old, so I did not have high expectations about the beer; however, I was pleasantly surprised. Our Springfield Manor ale samples included:
- Greene Ghost: This IPA has lots of citrusy hops. Great nose, definitely for hop heads.
- Toasted Nut Job: Caramel and nut flavor in this terrific brown ale. In my opinion, the best of the flight.
- Rust Bucket: A very nice lager! A little smoke with bready, toast notes. Not your typical lager. I really liked it!
- Sunshine Station: A hop forward pale ale. True to the style, a well-made ale.
I would recommend this fun place if you are a fan of beer; next time I’ll try the wine. If you want to sit down, head upstairs.
You can find Springfield Manor at:
11836 Auburn Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788, Frederick County MD
The tasting room is open: Friday 3-9 pm, Sat 12-9 pm, and Sun 12-6 pm.
Cheers!
