Five and Dime Ale House

Hampden, MD (Baltimore) Aug 1, 2018

The Columbia Pint Night crew ventured out of Howard County to the northern Baltimore neighborhood that brought us HonFest and Christmas on 34th Street – Hampden. Our final destination was the Five and Dime Ale House.

Outside Five and Dime Ale HouseThe old G. C. Murphy Co. Five and Dime is located at 901 W 36th Street, about 40 minutes from our Columbia, MD location. Tonight it took the 4 of us more than an hour to arrive in this very charming Baltimore neighborhood. After the long drive, we were doubly lucky, finding a parking place just outside the 5 & 10, plus a Good Samaritan gave us their still valid parking pass which covered parking for the rest of the night.

Walking in the 5 & 10, we were greeted by 3 floors of nostalgic charm. It brought back memories of the 5 & dime in my home town of Havre de Grace. I believe Woolworth owned my hometown store but I have not been able to confirm it. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

At the bar, we were greeted by John who had saved us seats at the bar, plus pint night veterans and now Baltimore residents, Dean Machine and Timmy. BTW, Timmy got word that his bid for a house in Towson, just 2 miles from his work, was accepted. Congrats, Timmy! Behind the bar was Columbia-born Drew who took great care of us for the night.

Five and Dime Ale House at the barIt was Manor Hill pint night at the Five and Dime. I know, it’s ironic to drive all the way into Baltimore for beer from a Howard County brewery. I was driving, so I ordered their Grissette, a delicious 4.2% beer, full of tart grapefruit taste.

Since this pub is part of the Ale House family, all Oliver beers were $4. A lot of the IPA loving beer crowd are not fans of their English-style ales, but I really enjoy the toasty, mild flavored beers. I wanted a low ABV beer like the molasses-flavored Dark Horse but the keg had just kicked (thanks, John). Instead, I had my “goto” Oliver beer, Bishop’s Breakfast on nitro. Creamy and smooth, this nutty oatmeal stout always delivers.

I did not try the food except stealing a few fries, which were delicious. If you are in the neighborhood, I recommend this fun, inexpensive pub.

Cheers!
