I started off this sour weekend with the Heavy Seas Raspberry Sour release. I met a few Society for the Preservation of Beer from the Wood (SPBW) friends at Heavy Seas’ Baltimore facility on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon.
Apparently, I was not the only one with this idea. I drove to the end of their very long and completely full parking lot, turned around and waited for a spot to open up. After about 5 minutes, a Heavy Seas patron obliged and I made the long walk to the brewery.
I spotted my SPBW friends who promised a seat at a table on the Pieces of Eight deck. I just needed to wade through the tasting room chaos for a Raspberry Sour (only available on tap at Heavy Seas). While waiting for my beer, I could hear Heavy Seas founder, Hugh Sisson, explain the intricacies of the lambic yeast contained in his Raspberry Sour.
Back at the sunny deck, I got a good look and taste of this unusual beer. It is a beautiful ruby red color, smelling and tasting of raspberries. It is sweeter than tart, probably a great sour for non-sour lovers. At 4.1% ABV, I could see quaffing a few of these on a hot afternoon. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I purchased a crowler of this fine beverage.
The Heavy Seas dining area, once enclosed, is now an open a deck. Future plans include building a dining area the depth of the brewery. This enormous expansion will accommodate many more people. The big question mark is the how Hugh will address the already limited parking. Perhaps a shuttle from a nearby lot?
Cheers!
