MD Brewery Challenge #39
Ocean City, MD
We wandered along the Ocean City boardwalk and happened upon Backshore Brewing Co. between 9th and 10th street. As an added bonus, this is my 39th visit to a Maryland brewery this year, part of my 2017 MD Brewery Challenge.
Like most of Ocean City in October, Backshore Brewing is only open on the weekends. At the entrance to Backshore Brewing is the front end of a Volkswagon Bus. We sat on the bus (actually a booth behind the bus). Our beer samples came on a bamboo skateboard.
We ordered pizzas to go with our flight. The pizzas conveniently fit under the skateboard full of 6 beer tasters. We sampled:
- S’moredwalk Stout – Nice oatmeal stout. Sweet and creamy.
- Fly By Night – Solid IPA with piney and earthy hops.
- Fist Pumpkin – A sweet pumpkin ale. Very drinkable.
- Harvest Moon – Tastes like fall, a little bready with a malty sweetness.
- Downtown Sugar Brown – Molasses/brown sugar taste. Very nice brown.
- Boardwalk Blonde – Sweet and light blonde ale. Nice toasty taste.
Inside, away from the sun sits the brewery and the bar. I walked inside to settle up and check out the brewery. The brewery is a 1-barrel kettle with 2-barrel fermenters.
At least once a year, I need to get my Ocean City Boardwalk fix. This year was a real treat. The warm sun and steady breezes were perfect for the kite contests. We saw some amazing choreographed kites dancing to music – very entertaining! In the middle of one performance, the kites were upstaged by a seemingly endless parade of Corvettes.
Next year’s annual stroll down OC’s boardwalk will definitely include Backshore Brewing. It is a fun, quirky place with a solid set of beers.
Cheers!
