MD Brewery Challenge #33
Baltimore, MD
Aaahh, rosemary garlic fries and Resurrection – all right on Charles Street – I must be at The Brewer’s Art.
I love The Brewer’s Art. They make very good beer and good food, all with a funky Baltimore vibe. Apparently, others agree with me; back in 2008, Esquire Magazine named it the #1 best bar in America.
Upstairs is a nice, comfortable bar fronting a dining room with tablecloths and a working fireplace. Downstairs is a ratskeller-like pub with multiple small cavernous eating rooms.
Located just a few blocks south of Penn Station, I would stop here during my commute home when I was riding on the MARC, back around 2008. I would hook up with some friends, enjoy a beer (usually an Ozzy/Beazly), and share some rosemary garlic fries (with mayo, of course!) and a cheese platter. Those were the days.
Enough reminiscing. Last Saturday, we stopped by for dinner and a flight of beer. Surprisingly, we were able to get a table almost immediately. I ordered a mushroom and hushpuppies dish – it was spicy and good.
I ordered a flight of beer to share. It includes all of their current in-house beers.
Below are my beer notes:
- Resurrection – A wonderful Abbey brown ale. The name comes from a failed first batch – the yeast died and had to be “resurrected”. It is extremely easy to drink but at 7% ABV, watch out.
- Birdhouse Ale – This is an earthy hopped pale ale with honey/rose sweetness.
- Sligo Creek – A flavorful blonde ale with a nice blend of hops and malt.
- 7 Beauties – Rye beer. I’m not a big rye fan, but this was a well-made smoky rye – not bad.
- 21 – Rye whiskey and 7 beauties. Nice alcohol taste.
The Brewer’s Art has a special place in my heart. I will definitely be back again.
Cheers!
