What’s your favorite beer?
I’m often asked, “What’s your favorite beer?” I have two standard answers.
- That’s like asking who is your favorite child. (Most people just groan at that one).
- The beer I happen to be drinking.
Right now, I’m drinking an Avery The Maharaja Imperial IPA and right now, it’s my favorite beer. This gorgeous beer has a malty nose with a blend of sweet caramel, pineapple & tangy hops. It finishes with bitter pine. It has a luscious mouthfeel. It is truly delicious!
The fun part is how this wonderful beer arrived in my glass. It all started about a week ago at Frisco Tap House for Avery pint night. On Wednesday, about 12 of us sampled a few Avery Brewing Co. ales. Several of us enjoyed Avery’s Apricot Sour, a puckery tart beer with tons of apricot taste. It was, at that moment, my favorite beer (see note above).
The Avery rep, Bruce, stopped by our table and passed out some Avery bling – stickers. Bruce actually works for a small beer distributor (sorry, Bruce, I have forgotten the distributor’s name). Bruce answered a question that has always puzzled me; “How does out-of-state beer get delivered to a distributor’s warehouse?” In this case, it is shipped from Boulder, Colorado. Bruce’s company works with a trucking company that combines beer with whatever shipment needs transporting East. It could be mulch, furniture, or whatever helps fill up the truck.
Yesterday, I stopped by Allview Liquors to pick up some beer for the Memorial Day weekend. While picking up a six of Dogfish Head’s Flesh & Blood, I noticed a Craft Beer Blowout Sale!!!! flyer. Having Avery on my mind from pint night, I looked and found quite a few Avery offerings, including one of my favorites, Maharaja. BTW, the sale should last another week.
Cheers!
