On The Deck
Tuesday night at the Rams Head Tavern in the historic Savage Mill is prime rib night. We sat on the deck out back, perhaps Howard County’s best outdoor dining spot.
It was a cool evening, so we asked to have the outside heaters lit. I started with their sampler of 6 beers. Originally, Fordham Brewery made beer at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD. Later, Fordham joined forces with Old Dominion in Dover, Delaware. The flight of six are samples from the Fordham and Dominion Breweries.
- Oak Barrel Stout – Sweet vanilla bean with roasted malt almost smoky taste with a touch of oak. A very drinkable stout.
- Cherry Blossom Lager – Cherry sweet nose with Maraschino cherry taste. If you like Maraschinos, maybe you’ll like this – extremely sweet.
- Grapefruit Pale Ale – Grapefruit sweetness with fruity hops. Very nice!
- Light Weight Lager – Crisp sweet, toasty lager. Only 3.5% ABV
- Copperhead Ale – Smoky sweet
The deck attached to the back of Savage Mill is a beautiful setting. The historic mill majestically sits on one side, while the Little Patuxent River runs on the other. Their food is also quite good. The prime rib looked mouth watering, but I picked the salmon and crab – yum!

It was a beautiful evening for it. I have always enjoyed their Oak Barrel Stout (I guess there’ no surprise there) but I agree it is a very nice brew.
Their Oak Barrel Stout is an old favorite of mine. Try their Grapefruit Pale Ale next time you lose your desire for stouts.
Can’t wait for the weather to get warmer and the soft shell crab platter to return to Rams Head Savage.

One of the best spots in the county. Cathy and I were there on the back deck a few weeks ago. Rarely disappoints. Hope to join you there sometime soon.
