May The Fourth Be With You
I swung by Jailbreak Brewing Company on May 4th. Pierce is a Star Wars fan and invited me to Jailbreak for their May The Fourth Be With You (Star Wars Day) celebration.
They were selling Star Wars glasses, Star Wars movies were playing on the TVs and some people had on Star Wars costumes. (Sorry, no pictures).
I sampled a couple of their beers:
- This Is 50 – Loved the Mango in this subtle IPA. A nice tribute to Columbia’s 50th birthday!
- (Cask) Czech the Technique w/ Lemon Drop Hops – As you may know, I’m very partial to cask beers. This was a great one! A nice subtle blend of lemon and hops. A very nice, smooth cask ale.
- De Garde De Faith – a very different beer, made with all French ingredients. It is lightly hopped, fruity, malty with a little smoke.
- Redaction – Their gluten-reduced beer. I liked this toasty, grainy pale ale.
I stopped by to talk to Gina to confirm our upcoming Jailbreak tour. About 20 of the pint night crew will be meeting at Jailbreak for a brewery tour and drinks. Also, Gina mentioned that construction of the JailBreak restaurant will begin next week. They are hoping to open the Troeg’s style eating area by the end of the summer. Gina and company keep Jailbreak hopping. On May 18th, Radio station DC 101 will spend the day at their Laurel taproom, giving away Preakness Infield Tickets.
Also, on May 13th, I’ll be on a bus leaving from Jailbreak and headed to Frederick. Some friends and I will ride to the MD Craft Beer Festival, a 1-day event with 40+ Maryland breweries.
At the bar, Liz filled me in on the gluten-reduced Redaction. Lead brewer, Clay, wanted to make a beer his mom could drink (she has celiac disease). He has done that for Redaction, a pale ale, where enzymes are added during fermentation to reduce gluten in the beer. Jailbreak is not an official gluten-free facility, so this 10 parts per million gluten beer is labeled gluten-reduced, although official gluten-free beers require less than 20 parts per million gluten.
Dizzy Cow Pizzeria
Heading out to my car, I was lured into sharing a wood-fired pizza from Dizzy Cow Pizzeria. We devoured their house specialty, The Frenchmen. It is a white pizza with olive oil, mozzarella, brie, figs, and honey. Yum!
Cheers!
