The Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (SPBW) gets together once a month to sample cask beers. February’s watering hole is the Heavy Seas Brewery in Halethorpe.
I enjoyed the Heavy Seas brewery tour with Captain Flint last December. Also, the brewery is one of 57 from my Maryland Brewery challenge. For a Thursday night in industrial Halethorpe, the taproom was hopping. Outside it was very cold, but the heater kept the enclosed eating area reasonably warm.
As a proud member of SPBW, I discovered that we are the one and only US chapter of SPBW. Our Chesapeake Bay Chapter celebrates its 20th anniversary this February 25th at the Wharf Rat in Baltimore at 8:00 PM. They are also organizing a trip to the UK for the first annual Woodfest. Also, the March SPBW meeting will be at Victoria’s Gastro Pub in Columbia.
The beers I tasted
- Double Cannon by Heavy Seas Beer — SPBW’s special order cask, with peppercorns and grapefruit. An unusual beer, but I enjoyed the spice from the pepper.
- Powder Monkey by Heavy Seas Beer — on Cask with lemon grass. A mild, slightly lemony pale ale.
- Siren Noire by Heavy Seas Beer — Delicious as always! Bourbon and chocolate… Yum
Cheers!

There was a nice article about Cask Beers in the Baltimore Sun today. The photo used was from the Heavy Seas Brewery. They mentioned other bars with Cask beer offerings. Wharf Rat, Max’s Taphouse, Mahaffey’s Pub and Metropolitan Coffeehouse and Wine bar. Happy Friday folks.
Thanks, Mark. Here’s the Sun article.
Is Heavy Seas Maryland’s best craft brewery?
