DC Brau Beers

DC Brau & Roots at Red

Beer and Cheese Pairing

A Saturday afternoon with free beer and cheese at Red…who could resist? DC Brau served the beer and Roots provided the cheese. Sean, the beer expert from DC Brau, served tastes of 5 enjoyable beers. His breadth of beer knowledge was amazing. The beers were:

  • Brau Pils – A delicious German pilsner, made

with German malt and Hallertau hops. No forced carbonation. Very nice earthy hop finish. It reminds me of Pilsner Urquell.

  • The Citizen — A Belgian pale ale with a nice Belgian banana scent and light earthy hop finish. A mildly sweet beer.
  • The Corruption — This IPA is very good! Is piney with some sweetness. It does not taste like an 80 IBU beer. It went well with the sharp cheddar cheese, Deer Creek’s The Stag.
  • Penn Quarter Porter — A smoky porter. I did not get the advertised “chocolate notes” — perhaps the pepper jack dulled my taste buds? I can imagine this beer would be great with anything from the barbecue.
  • The Stone Of Arbroath — wow, I really like this one. Again, it paired nicely with the pepper jack cheese. It has a nice malty, taste with hints of caramel and plum. For a scotch ale/wee heavy, the mildly hoppy and dry finish was surprising but delicious!

Red: Wine, Beer, and Spirits, is located in the Conscious Corner of Clarksville, MD, just around the corner from Roots. Red actually has a few taps in the back, fills growlers and offers tastes of whatever is on tap. They hold tasting events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Cheers!

  1. Love the Stone of Arbroath! Haven’t been to Red but it sounds like it’s worth the trip

  2. I bought the Brau Pils for my dad and the Stone of Arbroath for myself. The cheese pairings were a hit.

    1. Thanks for your post. I considered buying both those beers as well but my home inventory is overflowing. I did head over to Roots and bought some of The Stag from Deer Creek — loved that Wisconsin cheddar!

  3. Really nice tasting. The pairings were very cool. Both the beer guy and the cheese gal really knew their stuff. Nice to hang with you there Warren.

    1. Very nice tasting! Thanks for the recommendation. I learned a lot from the experts and had fun with you guys as well.
